The biggest buying mistakes happen before the viewing. They happen when buyers skip the checks that are free, fast, and available from home and discover the problems after the money has changed hands.
Here is the complete pre-visit checklist for any used EV.
The standard checks
HPI check
Covers outstanding finance, write-off status, stolen status, and mileage discrepancy. Run this on every used vehicle, no exceptions. A clear HPI is the foundation of a safe purchase.
DVSA recall check
Free at gov.uk/check-vehicle-recalls. On EVs, recalls can involve battery and electrical systems more serious than most petrol car recalls. Any open recall must be understood before purchase.
MOT history
Free at gov.uk/check-mot-history. Shows mileage at each test, advisories, failures, and any gaps in testing. Take the printed history to your viewing.
V5C verification
Confirm with the seller that the document is in their name, at the address you are visiting, before you make the trip.
The EV-specific additions
Battery lease
check for Renault Zoe, Kangoo ZE, Nissan Leaf, and e-NV200 only.
A standard HPI does not reliably reveal an active battery lease. Contact Mobilize Financial Services or Nissan Finance directly with the registration number. Get written confirmation of battery status before visiting.
Service history confirmation
Ask specifically whether battery health has ever been formally checked and documented. A seller who has this report is giving you a head start on your assessment.
