Range Anxiety: Is It Actually a Problem With a Used EV?

Get The Guide

Range anxiety, the fear of running out of charge before reaching your destination is one of the most common reasons people hesitate before buying an electric vehicle. Here is the honest answer to whether it is a real problem.

The honest answer.

For the majority of everyday driving, range anxiety is largely a pre-ownership fear rather than a day-to-day reality. The reason is simple: most EV owners charge at home overnight and start every morning with a full battery. On ordinary days, range is simply not something that comes up.

The mental model shift is significant. You stop thinking about fuel and start thinking about the last time you plugged in. Once that becomes routine which typically takes a few weeks the anxiety fades.

When it remains a genuine concern

Range anxiety becomes a real issue in specific situations: when the vehicle's real-world range does not comfortably cover regular journeys, when home charging is not available and the owner relies entirely on public charging, or when longer journeys require careful planning and charging stops are not conveniently located on the route.

All of these are preventable with the right vehicle choice and honest preparation before purchase.

What to do before you buy

Map your three longest regular journeys. Calculate the real-world range of the vehicle you are considering not the WLTP figure. Confirm that those journeys can be completed comfortably with range to spare, or with a single planned charging stop at a convenient and reliable location. If they cannot, choose a vehicle with a larger battery.

If you do not have off-street parking, research local public charging availability before buying not after. Coverage varies significantly by area and the difference between a well-served and a poorly served location is material.
