The EV MOT What Is Different and What to Expect

Get The Guide

The annual MOT test checks that a vehicle is roadworthy. For electric vehicles, some elements of the standard test do not apply and new EV-specific checks have been added in their place. Here is what used EV buyers need to know.

What is removed

No exhaust emissions test. No fuel system checks. No combustion-related component checks. A petrol car that fails on emissions alone cannot fail an EV, this is one area where EVs have a structural advantage in the MOT process.

What is added

  • High-voltage warning labels - all labels on high-voltage components must be present, legible, and undamaged. A missing or damaged label is an MOT failure.
  • Orange high-voltage cable condition - the distinctive orange cables running through the vehicle must be visually intact, correctly routed, and free from damage or wear. Any visible damage is a failure.
  • Isolation switch accessibility the emergency isolation switch must be accessible and in correct working order.
  • Regenerative braking operation the tester will assess whether regen is functioning correctly as part of the braking system check.

All standard roadworthiness items still apply: lights, tyres, brakes, steering, bodywork, glass, and everything else on the standard checklist.

How to read the MOT history of a used EV

Check the full MOT history at gov.uk/check-mot-history before viewing any used EV. Look specifically for advisories or failures related to high-voltage labels, cable condition, or ADAS components.

A single advisory is not necessarily serious. Recurring advisories in the same area or the same failure appearing in consecutive tests warrant careful investigation before buying.

Also check the interval between tests. An MOT that is significantly overdue, or gaps in the history, should prompt questions about where the vehicle was during that period and whether it was being used without a valid test.
